Should we change the death penalty? Changing the Death Penalty is something that people should think about. Some men and women are on death row for a minimum of 10 years. Others have been on death row for over 20 years. Why? They say because they believe it's punishment. The punishment would be the anxiety of being on death row and being isolated from other people or other prisoners which would result in the deteriation of the mental status. It could be agonizing for them and they could develop horrible feelings. Theye are isolated for about 23 hours every day. They have no access to education, empolyment, visitation and are they are not able to exercise. Some people say that the death penalty is cruel and unsual punishment.
But how do you punish a person who has commited the act of murder? In my opinion, the correct answer would be death. What isn't right is that they have to wait so long in their cell. To me, that is cruel and unusual punishment. It also costs about $59.00 to keep an inmate on death row per day. For one year on death row that's $21,535 dollars. For 10 years, $215,350 dollars. That is a lot of money that the people of the United States of America are paying in taxes each year and wasted on criminals instead of beniffiting the country. Those numbers are only referring to one inmate on death row. How is it fair that the people have to pay for them to eat and live for free? This is a big issue in America and the Supreme Court needs to reexaime the issue.
On this video it says " Who are we to determine that somebody else should die. Another human who made a mistake to suffer such punishment for a crime they did not understand." The question is did they understand what they have done? When they shot another person, who is just like them, and killed them, did they ask themselves " Hey, they have a family, people who love them. Should I or shouldn't I take this persons life?". Did they know the difference between right and wrong? Did they question themselves and say " Is this the best way to handle things?". In my opinon I bet they understood what they were doing. I bet they didn't stop and think about the people who love them. We also learn the difference between right and wrong from when we are young toddlers. We all know that killing isn't the answer. We also know that killing isn't the way to handle tough situations. So why, again, should we pay to keep them in solitary confidment for years while they do absolutely nothing beneficial for our country and waste away?
This is a great debate and we need to voice our opinions!
